A Dynamic Balance

What an interesting week of study it has been. The title of this weeks studies was: Measuring the Cost.  We learned all about balance and rest and how to not be burnt out. What were worthy sacrifices to the Gods of business and success, and what were worthy investments of our time. Why investing in our spouses and children are eternally and ethically significant. Here I sit at 1:15 am on a rainy Saturday morning plugging away toward a future. I can literally hear my husband snoring in the other room. My children are all tucked in dreaming soundly I hope of wonderful things away from the pressures of adult life. I am driven, and my weariness will not deter me from pursuing this dream of mine. When I read Monson's "Formla for Success" He stated 4 significant things: Be Prepared, Be Productive, Be Faithful, Be Fruitful.  He told us that we could effectively do that by filling our minds with truth, filling our lives with service, and filling our hearts with love.  I reall...

Reach High

What an interesting and demanding week it has been. School Work, Work, Thanksgiving, and family. So many things to be grateful for! This week was a great set of lessons that inspired us to Dream Big. In the Hero's Journey reading we learned a lot about who we want to have with us on our journey. It reminded me that if I want to get somewhere and be something, I need to surround myself with people who are going somewhere and doing things. It helped me to make a very difficult decision about the direction of my career. It is very exciting and terrifying at the same time. We learned from Taylor Richard that we need to set high goals and that with the help of the Lord, we can meet them. He asked that we never over-underestimate ourselves because it's more fun to do great things than it is to do good things. We should allow ourselves to "DREAM HUGE." It was very interesting to me to learn about the way Google structures its work week for developers from Marissa Maye...

Disciple Leadership

"The call to be a disciple-leader is a call to minister and to serve.  It is a call to lead as Christ leads.  It is leadership with a small “L”—the kind of leadership that builds and lifts and inspires through kindness and love and unselfish devotion to the Lord and His work. "                                                                                 - Kim B. Clark The focus of our study this week was on what it takes to become a good leader. As I read through the first 3 chapters of Hero's Journey, I was really inspired by the excerpts and examples that were presented. One, I will be posting on my fridge and reading to myself and my kids every time the word "can't" wanders into our vocabulary. The poem "Can't" by Edgar Guest was so wonderful.  The first chapter tell...

Fight to the Finish

"THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE WORTH FINISHING." - Jeffrey R. Holland The title of this weeks study was: OVERCOMING CHALLENGES. I found it very interesting this week that so much our study material was spiritually based. It made me wonder if it is because we are so blessed in the church to learn how to persevere continue in faith.  In reading the Hero's Journey selection for this week we learned several key things.  1.) To choose wisely the companions that we want with us on our journey. We learn that whom we choose can make or break us. Loyalty, positive honest support, positivity, and cooperation are key characteristic traits in our journey partners. Something that has stuck with me throughout this week was this question "Do your friends complement you, or merely compliment you? In other words, are you willing to surround yourself with people who possess strengths that you yourself lack, or do you just surround yourself with people whose words or weaknesse...

Daily Sharpening

“That which we persist in doing becomes easier, not that the nature of the task has changed, but our ability to do has increased.”   Ralph Waldo Emerson The study this week was labeled: Moving Forward with a Driving Passion. As I studied I found that the lesson included lots of wonderful ideas on how to do that effectively and with out integrity intact.  We discovered that character is a composite of our habits. A habit is the intersection of our knowledge about what to do, our skill in how to do it, and our desire and motivation to make it happen.  We read an abridged version of Stephen R,, Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It taught us that if we intend to master the 7 habits that we had to cast aside victim mentality, the notion of luck, and the idea that we achieve our success through some genetic tendency. The seven habits are as follows:  1.)   BE PROACTIVE  - Subordinate impulses to values. 2.)  ...
