Last Lecture

THE LAST LECTURE Do you dream of being free to follow your own ambitions? Do you dream of leading your own path to success? Do you dream of being self -reliant? Do you know that you are capable of achieving that end?               You and I, we are divinely endowed with the opportunity and potential to do great things that can change the world. In fact, it is our purpose to seek out how we can change the world around us for the better. Our missions are different to be sure, but we are responsible for founding our destiny in greatness. If we take time to listen to our inner voice and the directions that it calls us in, we will not be led astray.             Once a direction is chosen, set up obtainable goals and ideals. Then come the guardrails. Guardrails keep us from venturing too far off track and losing our way or ourselves. Preparation is key. Be careful to remember all of the what...

Cultivate

It is hard for me to believe that I am nearing the end of my first semester back at BYUI, and that of one pursuing Entrepreneurial Business. What a great class this has been.  I have felt motivated, excited and encouraged by all of the great examples we have studied. This week has been no different.     We started this weeks study with a talk by President Monson entitled "An Attitude of Gratitude". It spoke a lot about how we can cultivate that attitude in our lives. If we are able to do that we will be able to have more joy and be closer to the Lord. I will strive to do this more in my life.     Then we studied 2 fantastic articles from the Harvard Business School. Both focused on how we can identify and exploit good opportunities for possible business. Something useful that I learned was that I need to think about my own capabilities and see how they compare with others that have the same ideas and goals. I  should seek out things that ...

Be The Change

Wow this week just awakened something in me. I am so grateful to be a part of a business school that is encouraging me to look beyond myself to the world and how to make it a better place. In "What's a Business For" by Charles Handy he quoted something from Dave Packard. I feel like it sums up the intent of his article. Packard said, "I think many people assumes wrongly that a company exists simply to make money. While this is an important result of a company's existence, we have to go deeper and find the real reasons for our being. As we investigate this, we inevitably come to the conclusion that a group of people get together and exist as an institution that we call a company so that they are able to accomplish something collectively that they could not accomplish separately - they make a contribution to a society, a phrase which sounds trite but is fundamental." When we learned about micro lending from Muhammed Yunus I appreciated his willingness ...

A Dynamic Balance

What an interesting week of study it has been. The title of this weeks studies was: Measuring the Cost.  We learned all about balance and rest and how to not be burnt out. What were worthy sacrifices to the Gods of business and success, and what were worthy investments of our time. Why investing in our spouses and children are eternally and ethically significant. Here I sit at 1:15 am on a rainy Saturday morning plugging away toward a future. I can literally hear my husband snoring in the other room. My children are all tucked in dreaming soundly I hope of wonderful things away from the pressures of adult life. I am driven, and my weariness will not deter me from pursuing this dream of mine. When I read Monson's "Formla for Success" He stated 4 significant things: Be Prepared, Be Productive, Be Faithful, Be Fruitful.  He told us that we could effectively do that by filling our minds with truth, filling our lives with service, and filling our hearts with love.  I reall...

Reach High

What an interesting and demanding week it has been. School Work, Work, Thanksgiving, and family. So many things to be grateful for! This week was a great set of lessons that inspired us to Dream Big. In the Hero's Journey reading we learned a lot about who we want to have with us on our journey. It reminded me that if I want to get somewhere and be something, I need to surround myself with people who are going somewhere and doing things. It helped me to make a very difficult decision about the direction of my career. It is very exciting and terrifying at the same time. We learned from Taylor Richard that we need to set high goals and that with the help of the Lord, we can meet them. He asked that we never over-underestimate ourselves because it's more fun to do great things than it is to do good things. We should allow ourselves to "DREAM HUGE." It was very interesting to me to learn about the way Google structures its work week for developers from Marissa Maye...

Disciple Leadership

"The call to be a disciple-leader is a call to minister and to serve.  It is a call to lead as Christ leads.  It is leadership with a small “L”—the kind of leadership that builds and lifts and inspires through kindness and love and unselfish devotion to the Lord and His work. "                                                                                 - Kim B. Clark The focus of our study this week was on what it takes to become a good leader. As I read through the first 3 chapters of Hero's Journey, I was really inspired by the excerpts and examples that were presented. One, I will be posting on my fridge and reading to myself and my kids every time the word "can't" wanders into our vocabulary. The poem "Can't" by Edgar Guest was so wonderful.  The first chapter tell...

Fight to the Finish

"THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE WORTH FINISHING." - Jeffrey R. Holland The title of this weeks study was: OVERCOMING CHALLENGES. I found it very interesting this week that so much our study material was spiritually based. It made me wonder if it is because we are so blessed in the church to learn how to persevere continue in faith.  In reading the Hero's Journey selection for this week we learned several key things.  1.) To choose wisely the companions that we want with us on our journey. We learn that whom we choose can make or break us. Loyalty, positive honest support, positivity, and cooperation are key characteristic traits in our journey partners. Something that has stuck with me throughout this week was this question "Do your friends complement you, or merely compliment you? In other words, are you willing to surround yourself with people who possess strengths that you yourself lack, or do you just surround yourself with people whose words or weaknesse...
