THE LAST LECTURE
Do you dream of being free to follow your own ambitions? Do you dream of leading your own path to success? Do you dream of being self -reliant? Do you know that you are capable of achieving that end?
You and I, we are divinely endowed with the opportunity and potential to do great things that can change the world. In fact, it is our purpose to seek out how we can change the world around us for the better. Our missions are different to be sure, but we are responsible for founding our destiny in greatness. If we take time to listen to our inner voice and the directions that it calls us in, we will not be led astray.
Once a direction is chosen, set up obtainable goals and ideals. Then come the guardrails. Guardrails keep us from venturing too far off track and losing our way or ourselves. Preparation is key. Be careful to remember all of the what if’s, the why’s, the when’s, and the how’s of your dream. Ask around, there is sure to be someone else that has walked a similar path to the one you are seeking. Be respectful and grateful for those people; their time and their journeys. Soak everything in that you can that will help you on your own journey.
Surround yourself with people that will uplift and encourage you in your endeavors without blowing smoke. Cherish honesty, ethics, and positive energy in the people around you as it will influence how you see the world around you. Seek out the best information from the best places, books, and experts to educate yourself. Master the skills that will set you above your competition. Find the flaws you hold and work on turning them to strengths. Never stop investing in obtaining knowledge and experience for yourself and pledge to make that a life-long pursuit.
Cultivate the seeds of knowledge you collect into ideas. Be willing to work hard and to fail. Be prepared to see that every seed you plant will progress at different paces. Commit early to not let the hard things make you bitter or tough, but let them make you more pliable and teachable. Some seeds you plant will thrive, some with shoot up only to wither away, some will live out a scrawny existence, and many will never even sprout.  Learn to take it in stride, and push on with the lesson in your pack. When you do find a seed that thrives and grows, carefully distinguish who you should share it with. Make sure that they will compliment and support you as you find ways to share it with the world.
Pray mightily, and step into the world with that plant with faith that they will appreciate it too. Watch it change the world and let that be the value of your success. Not the monetary worth, or the prestige of discovering it, but the very effect it has should be the gauge you rate your success with. Ride the waves of growth and potential while reaching for your goals, and watch to stay within your guardrails. Stay humble and flexible, and do not let pride lead you to a pit of humble pie. Always strive to be a person of integrity and aspirations. Then share what you have learned with others walking similar paths and watch them grow and succeed along with you. There is room for their dreams too. If you want to be an entrepreneur, seek these things.

Some May Say I'm a Dreamer

This week’s topics and assignments at first felt pretty daunting to me. I have a lot of ambitions floating around in my head all of the time, but now I was being asked to put them on paper with an organized plan. It left me pretty overwhelmed, as I began to write though, I felt like years of ideas were just spilling out and it was easier than I had originally imagined. Jeff Sandefer said in his article entitled Stars and Steppingstones Some choices only come around once: “The objective is not to craft a perfect plan—life and circumstances change too much for that. You can, however, chart a course toward a meaningful star, set philosophical guardrails to mark the path, and lay steppingstones to mark each step in the right direction. After all, it would be a shame to wander aimlessly through a journey we will all take only once.” I felt time pressing in on me as I laid a path to my dreams during this assignment. At 37, and currently working on my degree to be completed in the ne...

The Art of Self Mastery

"The first and best victory is to conquer self; to be conquered by self is, of all things, the most shameful and vile."    - Plato This weeks studies were centering around the art of self mastery. N. Eldon Tanner gave a talk entitled, "Success is gauged by Self-Mastery." In the talk he stated that there were 2 elements of self mastery. One was to determine your course and set the sails of moral standards in your life. The second was to use will power to put wind in your sails to carry yourself forward. The idea is to set your standard before you are challenged with the storms and then use your self control and willpower to stay on the right track. We also studied a piece called "So You Want to be an Entrepreneur?" from the Acton School of Business. The piece reviewed three critical areas of knowledge you need to have a hold of to get started. 1.) Industry knowledge about the competitive structure of the industry you are in and having personal contact...

Disciple Leadership

"The call to be a disciple-leader is a call to minister and to serve.  It is a call to lead as Christ leads.  It is leadership with a small “L”—the kind of leadership that builds and lifts and inspires through kindness and love and unselfish devotion to the Lord and His work. "                                                                                 - Kim B. Clark The focus of our study this week was on what it takes to become a good leader. As I read through the first 3 chapters of Hero's Journey, I was really inspired by the excerpts and examples that were presented. One, I will be posting on my fridge and reading to myself and my kids every time the word "can't" wanders into our vocabulary. The poem "Can't" by Edgar Guest was so wonderful.  The first chapter tell...
